OAK HILLS Although no one likes to concede a league championship, most Mojave River League coaches would agree that this year s wrestling title is Sultana s to lose.So when Oak Hills hosted Hesperia on Thursday night, both teams knew that the winner would have the inside track to second place and a berth in the CIF-Southern Section Division I Dual Championships in February.As the final whistle blew and with the crowd at a fever pitch, it was the Bulldogs who emerged with a 32-31 win despite losing the last match of the night. Oak Hills led 32-27 heading into Caldwell s match with Hesperia s Alex Hernandez. If Hernandez scored a pinfall, the Scorpions would win the dual by a point. Any other outcome and Oak Hills would win.Hernandez led 2-0 after the first period, then in the second period he extended his lead to 7-0 and even had Caldwell on his back. But the two were at the edge of the mat and the official ruled them out of bounds. For the final four minutes of the match, Hernandez did his best to put Caldwell on his back, but the Bulldog showed resiliency in not letting it happen. In the end, Hernandez prevailed 11-1 but it wasn t the type of win Hesperia needed. It s hard whenever the other guy s sole purpose is to not give up a fall, that s hard to do, Scorpions coach Jim Straight said. Caldwell did a great job. He did what he s supposed to do. We knew it was going to be close. The 220 and 160 are the (matches) where their guys stepped up and got the wins give them all the credit. This hurts because we obviously wanted to take second. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 19-9 behind Shawn Elder s pin and Dean Camarena s 4-2 decision.The Scorpions rallied to take a 21-19 lead on pins from Tahm Singh and Mario Vasquez.But Oak Hills went back on top for good when Jesse Madrigal won a 7-2 decision and Jeffrey Thomas scored a pinfall win. There were three matches left and the Bulldogs had a 28-21 lead. The Scorpions were in need of some points and they got them from heavyweight Gabriel Quezada, who won his match via pinfall. That left the outcome of the dual to the lower weights. Oak Hills Aaron Wood nearly made the final match moot when he almost pinned Hesperia s Brett Gray in the first period. But Gray, like Tyler Caldwell, stayed off his back for the remainder of the match and lost 11-2.That major decision meant the 113-pound match would decide it all and Santiago said his team had faith in Caldwell. Tyler toughed it out, Santiago said. That s (what you have) to do at the end of the day work hard and get the job done. We knew we weren t going to underestimate (Hesperia). We knew it was a tough match. We knew they were training as hard as we were, but we knew we had to train that much harder. That s how we pulled it out in the end.
