"Everybody's going to pass away someday, so you might as well have an ice cream," said Terrie Berensten, executive director of Madrone Hospice. "Things like that seem small, but sometimes they're huge."November is National Hospice Palliative Care Month, and the Madrone Hospice House has a long history in Siskiyou County.Created in 1984, the local hospice program was "envisioned by a small group of community members," according to the website. The first volunteer training was offered in 1985.Since then, the organization has added paid staff, opened Hospice House in 1999 and began several local stores to assist funding its services, such as the Hospice Shop and Heartisan Boutique. The website notes that during its first year of licensure, hospice provided care to 19 patients. In 2012, it assisted 216 individuals, serving its 1,000th patient that same year.Summarizing its mission, Berensten said, "Hospice care provides pain management, symptom control, psychosocial support and spiritual care to patients and their families when a cure is not possible."Noting one of several misconceptions people might have about hospice, Berensten also pointed out, "Hospice is not a place," so much as it is a medical care program and philosophy. "Hospice is about you having decided, 'I don't want to do the medical model anymore,'" Berensten said. "'I just want to live my life as best as I can, as pain free as I can, and have quality.'"Although hospice's end-of-life care is suited for the final months of life, Berensten said the goal was to help people focus on living regardless of age, race, finances or background. "It's not about dying," she said. "It's about focusing on the here and now, the today, and not so much the tomorrow."In those final months of life, hospice can help patients by providing professionals and volunteers to help ease whatever mental, physical or spiritual pain they may be suffering. These services can include checking items off a bucket list, finding a way to tell your story and leave your legacy for later generations, or providing necessary therapies, such as animal, massage and Bowen therapy."Most people want to pass away at home they want to be in their own house, in their own bed, surrounded by their own things and their own smells," Berensten said. "That's what hospice does. We make that possible for most folks because that's very important."Price can often be an issue when it comes to end-of-life care or health care in general but hospice is covered by most insurance, Medi-Cal, Medicaid, most HMOs and Veterans Administration."Fear of costs should never prevent a person from accepting hospice care," Berensten said, "because we will do it without any of that stuff."Page 2 of 2 - If the patient lacks insurance and is unable to obtain any, Berensten said the care will be considered giving back to the community and written off as an unreimbursement.Hospice professionals will also help patients who lack insurance find some in case they "graduate" that is, they no longer meet the criteria under which they entered care. For those who graduate, hospice remains in contact with that patient and his or her family. Should they unfortunately meet the criteria again, they are brought right back into care."We don't just deal with the patients," Berensten added, noting how hospice provides support for a patient's family, friends and caregivers, as well as grief and bereavement after a loved one's passing. In fact, hospice provides grief and bereavement support as a community service, not just to those whose loved ones were supported by hospice. Those with more questions about hospice can attend a forum featuring hospice professionals and individuals who have used hospice care. The forum is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, with the location still to be determined. For more information, call (530) 842-3160."I really encourage people to have a conversation with their family and primary caregiver about what their end-of-life plans are before death comes knocking on their door," Berensten said. "You can't be afraid to talk about death." louis vuitton taschen Lucky for Life for 11/28/2013 :06-11-15-20-41 LB-34 Next Drawing: Mon. Dec. 2 http://www.adonim.de/blog/?id=106

a It锟 been a good 12 months for Hugh Jackman. He voiced the boomerang-slinging, Australian-accented Easter Bunny in 锟ise of the Guardians,锟?was Oscar-nominated and won a Golden Globe for his Jean Valjean in 锟es Miserables,锟?and got rave reviews from fans and critics for his sixth screen appearance as Logan in 锟he Wolverine.锟?He actually plays a contemporary character in the new thriller 锟risoners锟?锟?Keller Dover, the concerned, angry, vengeful dad of a young girl who锟 been kidnapped and who is convinced that the detective on the case (Jake Gyllenhaal) isn锟 doing enough to find her. Jackman, definitely one of the nicest guys in the business, spoke about the film and his approach to his character at the Toronto International Film Festival last week.On the page and even in the trailer, 锟risoners锟?looks like just another entry in the kidnap-revenge movie genre. But it锟 much more than that.JACKMAN: The script came to me about a year before [director] Denis Villeneuve came onboard, and I loved the script. It was the kind of script that could have become a more generic thriller. It could have veered that way. But in the DNA of the script was a more ambitious thriller, not just one that grips you and keeps you on the edge of your seat, but one that actually makes you contemplate and think for many days after. You have kids. How hard was it to make a movie with this theme?JACKMAN: As an actor, you do everything you can to convince yourself to pretend to be someone else, and dive into their shoes and their experience, and bring that to life. Part of the research I did was looking into what REALLY happens in this situation. Like what happens on day one, on day two [after a kidnapping]? Do you print fliers? How do you react? What happens emotionally? This touches on really elemental fears that we all collectively have. That锟 why I think the film is cathartic to watch. There锟 a reason we don锟 just go to see comedies. Somehow as humans we also need to touch on the real fears that we push down every day of our lives.Did you speak to any people that have gone through the experience of a child being kidnapped?JACKMAN: I read something from a father whose kid was gone, and he said the most maddening part of the whole thing was the powerlessness of a parent knowing that the child was waiting for YOU and can锟 understand why you锟e not there. The movie takes place over eight or nine days, and part of the research I did was on sleep deprivation for my character, because the idea of to sleep is to fail your child.Page 2 of 2 - Some of the most intense scenes are between you and Jake, and the sometimes furious disagreements your characters have over the handling of the case.JACKMAN: The relationship between our characters is very important to the story. We talked about that a lot. We only had four or five scenes together, and we wanted to make the most of them. It was one of those occasions where as actors neither of us wanted to leave the scenes. We wanted to dive into them and investigate them.Viewers are going to be divided as to the vigilante nature of your character, especially when the film gets into his relationship with the kidnapping suspect (Paul Dano). Please share your own feelings about whether he does too little or too much.JACKMAN: I can锟 make up the minds of audiences, and I锟 thrilled that Denis and [screenwriter] Aaron Guzikowski made a film that forces that moral ambiguity. It is uncomfortable, and that锟 what I like about it. It almost subverts the genre. You think, OK, we锟e going down this path with this guy and, yeah, let锟 enact some rightful justice. But all of a sudden you feel uncomfortable, and what that forces you to do is to question why, if you went along with him, why you so easily go along with that way of thinking. And then you ask, what would I do in that situation. That锟 where the film锟 power lies and where it transcends the genre.锟risoners锟?opens on Sept. 20.Ed Symkus covers movies for More Content Now. loui vuitton We are not the enemy of government; rather, we are the champions of citizens, of our communities.
