There's an attempt to focus on a core group of pilots, aircrew and intensive care paramedics - in a similar vein to the lifeguards of Bondi Rescue - but it will take time for them to become family. burberry outlet,http://www.princealbertparklandhealth.com/list.html,0,0,0,0,0,0,,4,false Never-ending need and long distances to travel are just a few struggles organizations face.By Kelsey BrayCHEYENNE -- It's a rainy Sunday morning at Black Dog Animal Rescue, and volunteer Ashley Clark is waiting for two new dogs to arrive. This makes 16 dogs that have arrived this week, in addition to the 10 that came in last week. She laid out blankets to avoid muddy floors, but two foster kittens staying there have a different idea for them. Biscuit jumps on his brother, Mr. Purr-Purr, and the blankets slide along with them. The cats stop when they hear a car door closing outside. The dogs, Gracie and Texas, have arrived from the Rawlins Rochelle Animal Shelter.Clark and volunteer Gwen Stout get leashes on the dogs and let them walk around. The way our state is, most of the dogs are coming off at least a three-hour ride, Clark says. So they need to get a walk and get some energy out. Next is the intake process. The dogs are inspected, vaccinated and microchipped.Gracie is already at home. The Rottweiler mix found a tennis ball almost instantly and will flop on her back for anyone nearby.Texas, now Titus, is a little more timid. The shelter contacted Black Dog Animal Rescue because he was having a hard time at the shelter. The dogs then get some colorful bandanas on and go across the street to get their picture taken with the help of some treats and encouraging words from the volunteers.Titus is then sent to his foster home, while Gracie will be boarded briefly until her foster home is ready. It s a pretty short day for the BDAR volunteers. But their work is never over.Animal rescues face many struggles, including lack of funding and space. There are also the extra challenges they face in Wyoming, such as long transport times and nasty weather.Volunteers have to put in a lot of hard work to keep the rescues running and save the animals they love.Wyoming rescuesBDAR was founded about six years ago by Britney Wallesch. She saw what other rescue organizations around the U.S. were doing and wanted to bring that here. It really was just kind of a leap of faith, she said. But you look at all the little noses that run in and out of here that needed somebody to do that for them, so it keeps us going all the time. BDAR is funded through donations, grants and earned income like adoption fees. It is run primarily by about 150 volunteers. They rescue dogs from shelters around the state and have anywhere from 25 to 50 at a time. They often take in special-needs or young, large-breed dogs. Wallesch said these are dogs that people adopt as puppies and don t train properly. I think there s a misperception that they re in the shelter because there s something wrong with them or because they are totally unmanageable, she said. But I tell people all the time, the reality is none of them started out as a shelter dog. They all end up there, not because there s something wrong with them but because the people that came into their lives don t act responsibly. All the animals are housed in foster homes, since there isn t enough room at their office. This is how several other rescues in the state operate as well.Wyoming also has a facility that provides sanctuary for animals used for research. The Kindness Ranch, located in Hartville, houses dogs, cats, pigs, sheep and horses. The animals have been used in research such as flea and tick studies, nutrition studies and human drug tests. They stay with caretakers in several cabins on the 1,000-acre property.Caretakers at the ranch have a unique challenge, as some of the animals have never been outside of a lab, executive director Tamra Brennan said. We have to teach them how to be a dog they ve never done all of the doggy things, she said. We teach them how to use a doggy door. We leash train them, take them for walks. Whatever the operation, many rescues in the state face similar challenges.Struggles The biggest challenge for us all is the never-ending need, Herding Rescue Dogs of Wyoming Inc. founder Joan Adsit said. Adsit has anywhere from 35 to 50 dogs in foster homes in Sheridan. For every dog we save, there are 10 more we can t. It s perpetuated by excessive breeding and a lack of responsibility. Most of the dogs are in shelters through no fault of their own. From June 1 to Oct. 16, the Cheyenne Animal Shelter sent more than 260 animals to rescues in the state. That s almost double as many as we sent out last summer, operations manager Kate Miller said. She said this is because of increasing relationships with rescues, but it also illustrates the growing need. And when the animals come out of the shelter, they can be stressed out. Dogs can t sit down and tell you that they re stressed or scared or they don t understand what s happened to them, Wallesch with BDAR said. So they chew things, and they go potty, and they bark. They may also have injuries, or need vaccinations and need to be spayed or neutered. This takes money, time, volunteers and foster homes. What we re running into now, six years into the program, which is a problem we ve never had before, is we have so many dogs coming through the program now that we re exceeding the capacity of our local veterinarians, Wallesch said. So we re having to wait a long time to get the dogs in. She said having a bigger facility where they could house dogs instead of finding foster homes would help tremendously, especially for dogs that can be adopted immediately.Susan Kramer with Happy Endings Animal Rescue in Pinedale is also in need of a facility. They rescue dogs and cats. She said using foster homes can double the work, as they have to find one available before they can take an animal in. This means they re using time and resources to look for a foster home, rather than a permanent home.Another expense comes from transporting animals across the state.State strugglesTransportation is complicated by the fact Wyoming is a large and spread-out state. We have to transport (dogs), sometimes hundreds of miles, to get them to their foster homes, Wallesch said. It s a lot of mileage. It s a lot of expense. Wallesch said a lack of specialized veterinary care leads to a lot of travel. When they do have an extraordinary need, all of the specialists are in Colorado, and we re taking the dogs down there, she said.Volunteers with HEAR recently had to drive eight hours to a vet in Denver. This summer, we took in 13 dogs from one family, and two had to be taken to Denver, Kramer said. It took us three to four weeks to get that arranged. And after the surgery is complete, some dogs require post-operative care, such as hydrotherapy. This involves putting a dog in water to help strengthen limbs with less strain and weight. We get told all the time we need to take the dogs swimming. In January. In Cheyenne, Wallesch said.Bad weather also means less travel for rescues like the Kindness Ranch, which is in a remote area. If we ve got really bad snowstorms for a couple of weeks straight, we can t travel to another state to pick up animals, Brennan said. The challenges rescues face in Wyoming aren t all environmental either. Sometimes, they involve the mentality of the people here, Rachel Kristiansen said. She and her mother founded Second Chance Sheridan Cat Rescue in Sheridan and have about 60 to 65 cats. Along with rescuing cats, they also sponsor free spay and neuter clinics for low-income families in the area. There does seem to be a mentality, especially for cats, that they are throw-away animals, she said. People will toss it outside, and think they can figure out how to survive. But a house cat doesn t know how to hunt and survive on its own. Kristiansen said several weeks ago they got a call from a shelter after a landlord found a pregnant cat in one of his properties. The tenants moved to California and left her there. The cat would have been euthanized if the rescue hadn t taken her. These challenges aren t impossible to overcome though, according to Wallesch. Wyoming has challenges, but they are not in excess of anyplace else that has challenges, she said. There are lots of places that have risen to it and met those challenges already. Future changeShe said one of the ways to rise to the challenges is for rescues to focus their mission on certain breeds or animals. They can also locate offices in the center of a community and make sure people know all about them and what they do. People love their animals, Wallesch said. The community loves to help animals. Being more present may help bring in more volunteers, which are always needed.BDAR uses volunteers for duties like answering emails and transports.Wallesch said some of the volunteers are basically working a second full-time job with no pay.Clark said it s necessary to make the program function. For instance, volunteers help out with mobile adoption sites at places like Petco. They take dogs there for people to meet and recently had three taken home from one. If we didn t have volunteers who are willing to spend a couple hours on Saturday doing that, those dogs potentially wouldn t have been adopted, Clark said. A lot of those dogs are seen at those events, and people fall in love with them there. Fostering animals is also necessary. It s also very rewarding, Cheyenne s Jeannine Stallings said. She has been fostering animals for about 15 years. She said they often only need attention and socialization. One of the hardest parts is letting them go. When a dog leaves me, it is stressful and emotional, and I usually cry, she said. But I also know he s going into a good home. And that s very rewarding. Animal rescue is an emotional business. Volunteers deal with abused and neglected pets. When they rescue one dog, three more may not get rescued. However, volunteers have to focus on the positive aspects, Brennan said. The Kindness Ranch got a group of dogs in June that was used in a nutrition study. When the dogs arrived, employees lined their crates up and opened the doors. One dog went out of his kennel and just started running racetrack around the enclosure, she said. We were all laughing. It was adorable. Wallesch also tries to focus on the positive. She talks about how volunteers handle the pressure while watching Biscuit and Mr. Purr-Purr climb on the counters. The kittens are desperate for human attention and will do anything to get it including biting a stack of folders on the office desk and climbing on Wallesch s lap. They ve been in shelters their whole lives. They don t know what it s like to live in a home.Wallesch doesn t focus on this, though. She focuses on the fact that the cats are safe with them and will someday know what it s like to have a home of their own. We can t get bogged down in the day-to-day tragedies of animal rescue, Wallesch said. We have to focus on the bigger picture, that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. What we re doing every day is getting closer to that light. How you can helpAnimal rescues in the state are in need of volunteers, donations and foster homes. The following is a list of a few rescues in Wyoming and their contact information:Black Dog Animal Rescue, Cheyenne: 214-6600, and on Facebook.
